Who will be next?
Re "Clearing the clinic door," editorial, May 28:
Are we Americans so easily blinded that we fail to see the
latest assault on our civil rights? President Clinton just
signed a bill making it a federal crime to block (even
peacefully) the door of an abortion clinic. Does anybody
doubt that if this law were written 35 years ago it would
refer to all white establishments, and Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr. would still be in the federal pen?
Peaceful civil disobedience is already a crime. That's
the whole point: One chooses to disobey the law. To single
out a particular group is to diminish the rights of all.
Who's next? Nuclear protestors? Greenpeace? ACT-UP?
Grandmothers for Peace? Labor unions?
